He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. - Colossians 1.15-20 ESV
It seems Paul was convinced as to the identity of Jesus. Phrases like “image of the invisible,” “firstborn,” “before all things,” “all things hold together,” “head of (the church),” “firstborn from the dead,” “reconcile to himself,” and “the blood of his cross” matter. Words matter. And this particular Word matters most!
When I think of the identity of Jesus, John 1 comes to mind. But quickly thereafter Colossians 1 must be considered. Sentences, paragraphs, and a plethora of pages have been dedicated to commentary over these six verses. The section is considered one of the earliest of hymns within the Church. And because there of the rhythmic structure, some scholars are skeptical that Paul actually wrote the words. However, my intent (at least in this post) is not to debate the authorship. I’m especially interested in what the words contain.
Want to know God, get to know Jesus.
Want to know Jesus, know the Word.
THE Word!
